71 In 1850, Franz Joseph participated for the first time as emperor in the second of the traditional Habsburg expressions of dynastic piety: the Holy Thursday footwashing ceremony, part of the four-day court observance of Easter. The master of the staff and the court prelates chose twelve poor elderly men, transported them to the Hofburg, and positioned them in the ceremonial hall on a raised dais. There, before an invited audience observing the scene from tribunes, the emperor served the men a symbolic meal and archdukes cleared the dishes.

3 The present chapter focuses on the 1851 inspection tour of Galicia and the aborted 1868 Kaiserreise. The first section offers a brief overview of Habsburg Galicia. The second section examines the 1851 efforts to bring the imperial court to this distant province and to define the roles of dynasty, local elites, and the wider population within the idealized neoabsolutist system. As the final section of this chapter shows, in 1868, after the institution of the constitutional system, the planned imperial visit was designed to project a very different conception of the relationship between the imperial crown and the Polish aristocracy.
