They cool the elephant’s blood on very hot days. As with the fox, the air blows over the ears and the blood cools down. Elephants, especially the bulls (males), sometimes use their huge ears in another way. They hold their ears out and flap them. They want to look bigger than they really are. This behaviour usually happens during the mating season. But elephants will hold out their ears at other times as well. It is a warning to enemies that they are very strong, powerful animals. Most of the time, however, elephants are gentle animals.

This behaviour usually happens during the mating season. But elephants will hold out their ears at other times as well. It is a warning to enemies that they are very strong, powerful animals. Most of the time, however, elephants are gentle animals. They communicate with each other in many ways and with all their senses. The position of ears and trunks can show their mood, such as fear, anger, or contentment.
