At the same time, vacillation between this distancing and the ownership implied in the formulation of “our people” points to the ambivalence of the anticolonial stance. Perhaps no author better captures the relationship of the artist and intellectual to this anticolonial ideology than Jesús Colón in A Puerto Rican in New York and Other Sketches (1961), one of the first literary endeavors by a Puerto Rican written in English. In the book’s preface, Colón frames his project as an intervention into the public sphere by outlining his objective to correct the misperceptions and stereotypes about Puerto Ricans encountered in “the New York press”: “Invariably, this treatment harps on what is superficial and sentimental, transient and ephemeral, or bizarre and grotesque in Puerto Rican life—and always out of context with the real history, culture and traditions of my people” (Colón 9).
