These communities are similar to agricultural communities in the Lower Valley because their populations are over 90% Chicano while Anglos make up the power elite (Ornstein et al. 1976:2). El Paso-Cd. Juárez have a combined popula­ tion of over one million with Juárez having over 700,000 itself. Some recognize that El Paso has shifted from a "homogeneous southern city 24 CHICANO ENGLISH: AN ETHNIC CONTACT DIALECT to a California-like hodge-podge" (Adams 1963:1-2).

And yet differences can also be recognized within their ethnic group which cut across regions and residential patterns. Social variation within the Chicano community is directly linked to the level of edu­ cation and employment. At least four major groups can be distinguished: upper class, middle-class, working class, and migrants. Each social group generally has a different set of contacts with Anglo and Mexican communities. These differences are fundamental to an approach to ChE or SW Sp since they typically influence patterns of linguistic variation, language use, language shift, bilingualism, and code-switching.
