The Love of Friends The intended audience for his Seneca commentary was the generation to which Calvin himself belonged: young, university-trained men impassioned by the world of French humanists and on their way to becoming jurists. All his life Calvin would define friendship in terms of a commitment to a common cause; it was within that framework he was able to express fraternity and intimacy. His models were classical and contemporary: Cicero’s treatise on friendship was a standard work among Renaissance readers, as was Erasmus’ contribution to the subject.

Wolmar, Daniel and Duchemin all later joined Calvin in the city while storm clouds gathered in Paris as the Sorbonne turned on the royal lecturers of the Collège Royal (Budé, Nicolas Cop, Pierre Danès and François Vatable), the spiritual disciples of Lefèvre. Calvin’s legal studies cast in relief the central intellectual and spiritual questions of the French Renaissance, as witnessed in the different approaches advocated by his rival French and Italian teachers. Both were exponents of humanist methods, but in quite different ways.

Yet in their legal system and institutions as properly conceived Calvin saw the presence of a natural law by which justice, clemency and good governance were possible. He never suggested that Roman rule was deficient on account of the absence of Christian revelation. But, as Nero himself adequately exemplified, the stench of corruption was pervasive. Calvin emphasized the place of natural law, the order of law embedded in creation that makes all human laws possible. This was the foundation of Roman governance and its greatest glory.
