We Easterners such as Tibetans, like myself, look to Western technology feeling that once we develop material progress, our people can reach some sort of permanent happiness.

Hence, there is no sense in one-pointedly considering a certain person to be just a friend and another person to be just an enemy. When you contemplate in this manner, the one-pointed apprehension of some persons as friends and others as enemies and the consequent generation of desire and hatred will become weaker in strength. Imagine in front of yourself three people—a friend, an enemy, and a neutral person—and, while observing them, consider that there is no certainty that any one of them will at all times either help or harm.
