T r e a t m e n t of loblolly pine chips t y p i c a l l y resulted in energy savings equivalent t o t h o s e o b t a i n e d w i t h a s p e n , b u t at m u c h lower lignin loss. A l t h o u g h t r e a t m e n t efficacy is apparently n o t d u e t o bulk lignin loss, it c o u l d , however, b e d u e t o l i m i t e d lignin modification, such as a decrease in t h e degree of lignin p o l y m e r i z a t i o n , or lignin d e g r a d a t i o n in a limited specific zone.

T h r e e b a g s were recovered i m m e d i a t e l y prior t o inoculat i o n a n d t h e other three b a g s after c o m p l e t i n g t h e fungal t r e a t m e n t . Values for h a n d s h e e t properties m a d e from 1 0 0 - m A C S F p u l p s were int e r p o l a t e d from a linear regression performed o n a series of three or four p u l p s refined for e a c h t r e a t m e n t .
