T r e a t m e n t of loblolly pine chips t y p i c a l l y resulted in energy savings equivalent t o t h o s e o b t a i n e d w i t h a s p e n , b u t at m u c h lower lignin loss. A l t h o u g h t r e a t m e n t efficacy is apparently n o t d u e t o bulk lignin loss, it c o u l d , however, b e d u e t o l i m i t e d lignin modification, such as a decrease in t h e degree of lignin p o l y m e r i z a t i o n , or lignin d e g r a d a t i o n in a limited specific zone.
