Her doctoral fieldwork and resulting monograph, Coming of Age in Samoa, suggested that adolescence was culturally contingent and captured a massive public readership, making Mead into perhaps the most well-known anthropologist in the world (Mead 1928). Collectively, it is worth noting that many of the Boasians were immigrants, women, Jewish, or some combination of the three (Bernstein 2002). The final section of this chapter will briefly describe each of the three influences before going on to give a description of the current state of the field.
