However, the search for disciplinary ancestors too often and too easily obscured the historical reality of early modern America; missionaries and colonial writers recorded Native American bodies, languages, artifacts, and rituals for their own reasons. Later histories have accordingly revised our understanding of early modern writing about travel and the colonial encounter by analyzing proto-anthropological texts on their own terms (Campbell 1999; Carey 2003). Writings about indigenous peoples during colonial and early republican years centered on the question of the American continent’s fundamental distinctiveness and vitality (Ellingson 2001; Gerbi 1973).

While this development may at first appear surprising, in fact, it is part and parcel of the historical development of the agricultural sciences for the following reasons: (1) most agricultural sciences are applied sciences and thus cannot be separated from current social developments and (2) as mentioned above, a primary goal of the land-grant institutions and research stations is to perform research useful for local farmers who are themselves effected by their consumers’ desires. The final section of this chapter will briefly describe each of the three influences before going on to give a description of the current state of the field.
